Merwin “Pete” Wiley Laird, age 101 of Energy, died recently.

Laird in Laird Hill, Rusk County, TX.He attended Kilgore High School and graduated from Kemper Military Academy in Boonville, MO in 1936 where he was commissioned as a 2nd LT in the Infantry Reserve of the US Army. He also attended University of Texas at Austin in 1937.Pete was a retired rancher at one time owning several ranches in Milam, Bell, Falls, Williamson, Navarro, Mason, Presidio and Hamilton Counties. He also was the President of Three-Way Grain Company and owned Grain Mills in Georgetown, Jarell and Lott, TX for many years. During the 1940’s he was President of WH Richardson Wholesale and Retail Hardware Store which was located in Austin, TX.He was a member of the SAE Fraternity during his college career. He was an avid bird hunter, who owned and operated Lonesome Quail Kennels and is known for kenneling dogs from well known bird hunters, in the State of Texas. Over his lifetime he owned 400 dogs, some of which of his favorites were “Pal”, “Stiley”, “Dude”, “Duke” and “Tiger”, just to name a few.He was preceded in death by his first wife of many years, Marian Crane Laird Smith, daughter Shirley Laird Hargett; sisters; Lois Overton, Hazel Smith and Evelyn Cashen.He is survived by his children; Joe Mack and Mary Anne Laird of Temple, Cissy and James Thompson of Ft. Worth; Pat and Cynthia Smith of Johnson City; grandchildren Lissa Hazard, Bill and Joe Shack Laird, Laird and Claudia Thompson, Joe Pete Hargett, Maynanne Armstrong and Cissy Beth Wodrich; 12 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.We would like to thank the Solaris Hospice Inc. care givers, special friends Roy Rogers, Irma Martinez and Nancy Rodriguez for their many years of service to our family plus numerous others for their care and consideration.Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00P.M.
